26-29 JUN|FORT HARE AUTUMN SCHOOL IN CHINTSA

From 26-29 June 2017, FES South Africa, in collaboration with the University of Fort Hare will host the second of three annual sessions of the Fort Hare Autumn School in Chintsa. The second Fort Hare Autumn School (FHAS) module will provide the necessary knowledge about key institutions and actors in South Africa’s political system to identify fault-lines, extrapolate checks and balances and comprehend the complexity of modern policy-making.

In 2015 and 2016, South African young people have challenged the definition of political participation” by extending their political voice beyond voting, party protocols and normative forms of mobilisation. From student protest and the Occupy Luthuli House protest to the active absence from the voting stations as protest, young people have begun to rethink political power through civic engagement.

5 Apr| iCre8 Research Workshop- Township And Rural Green Economic Innovation Through ICre8 EKasi. Kwa-Zulu Natal

iCre8 eKasi is a YouthLab initiative, it is a township economic revitalisation project aimed at innovating economic ecosystems in townships. iCre8 ekasi leverages potential opportunity for economic investment and trade by focusing on mapping, innovating and reactivating the potential of young people as economic actors. Through iCre8 ekasi townships are changed into hubs of social and economic life that sees communities responding to the social and economic ills they face by harnessing existing economic needs and assets by turning them into opportunities for entrepreneurship, employment, new industries and new patterns of trade within townships.

24-25 Mar|iCre8 Bootcamp – North West

YouthLab has partnered with Sophiatown Green Incubator and other trainers to create a specific innovation boot camp aimed at encouraging, testing, greening and launching economic innovations for township youth. Ideas can be businesses or social initiatives. The Green Innovation boot camp will take young people from idea to business model through various processes. The top idea from each province after the boot camp will be given a grant to activate their innovation.

27-28 May | iCre8 Ekasi: Climate Jobs,Youth Development and the Township Economy

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Foundation will be partnering with the Youth Lab to run a workshop on township-based youth empowerment. The focus will be on developing skills to create climate jobs, and build a sustainable low-carbon political economy. Participants will deliberate on various policy interventions to support the creation of cooperatives, which operate on a sustainable economic model.

The outcomes of this activity will contribute to the current national conversation on reviving township economies in order to address the triple crises of youth unemployment, inequality and poverty.
